What Is A Heat Pump Hot Water System?
Never heard of a heat pump hot water system before? Don’t worry, we can help you understand them!
Heat pumps work by transferring heat from one element into another, usually in the form of air to water. These systems produce a gas by passing a liquid refrigerant through an evaporator. As this process takes place, the refrigerant also extracts heat energy from the air.
To help it absorb even more heat, the gas is then compressed. This heat is then transferred to your water supply, which heats the water whilst also cooling the gas. Following this, the now cool gas is moved onto an expansion valve and once again condensed into a liquid form. The process then begins again when needed.
The effectiveness of a heat pump hot water system ultimately relies on the difference between your storage tank’s water temperature and its ambient temperature. Some components of the system require electricity, hence why this unit sometimes is referred to as an electric heat pump. Don’t confuse these with regular electric hot water systems, however, as electric heat pumps are a more efficient model.
