Leaking Conergy 300 litre Thermosiphon Solar Hot Water System
Last week Jim’s Plumbing attended a call out for a Conergy 300 litre solar hot water system that had suddenly begun to leak profusely. The customer had called up early in the morning and needed urgent assistance as they could not isolate the water supply and were losing large amounts of water through the broken heating system.
Customer’s old leaking Conergy solar hot water system
Luckily Jim’s Plumbing arrived onsite within 15 minutes of the initial phone call and quickly isolated the water supply to prevent any further water damage.
As can be seen in the photograph below the customer had engineered an interesting access system to reach the hot water unit, by mounting two ladders either side of the solar system.
Whilst our plumber was very appreciative of the effort this customer had gone to make his job easier, he used a safety harness to safely access the unit and assess it.
Unfortunately the Conergy solar hot water system and its panels were beyond repair and so our plumber recommended a full replacement. Although the customer ideally would have liked to replace the unit with another Conergy system, the German company filed for insolvency in 2013.

After assessing our client’s daily water requirements we decided to install a Rheem Hiline 52S300 solar hot water system due to its 300 litre tank capacity, making it ideal made it the ideal unit for this family of 4. The unit also had similar dimensions to the existing Conergy system and so minimal pipe alterations needed to be made.

The new installation required two plumbers and a small crane to fit the hot water system and panels to the roof and was completed on the same day as the initial assessment.
