Repaired Faulty Valve in Gas Booster on Chromagen Gas Boosted Solar Hot Water System
Today Jim’s Plumber attended to inspect this Chromagen hot water heater. It is a solar powered gas boosted system which means its primary power source of heating the water will come from solar energy.
However, on overcast days, it has a gas booster which will heat the water. This way, there should be no shortage of hot water and it should be available 24/7.
There are a lot of these units in households throughout Australia as many new house builders were using these as part of the house and land packages they were offering to new home buyers.
In the pictures provided, you can see the big cylinder which is sitting on the ground. This is used as a storage tank for the hot water. There are solar panels on the roof not shown in this pic which are used to heat the water in the tank.
In the picture, you will see a smaller tank mounted on the wall. What this is, is an eternity T20 continuous flow which acts as a gas booster, so should the water temperature in the tank not achieve the required level, this device will deliver additional heat to make sure it meets the requirements.
For the majority of the time, the unit will function just using the solar panels, which is ideal as it is a much cheaper way to run than using the gas. But you will have peace of mind knowing there is a backup in case the weather is not so favourable.
Now in the case we attended, the customer stated the hot water was running out very quickly or was only coming out warm. After having the solar panels checked by I licensed technician, the customer assumed it was the water heater itself.
And he was correct.
As with all solar powered- gas boosted systems, they operate at a lower efficiency during the winter months.
This is where the gas booster takes over. But the Gas booster on this particular unit had become faulty.
As the unit itself was only several years old, there was no corrosion or leaking from the tank, which means a replacement was not necessary.
There was a faulty valve in the gas booster unit which was not letting the system know the water was too cold.
Luckily our plumber had the appropriate replacement part in the van.
So after a short amount of time and a fraction of the cost of a new unit, the gas booster was working optimally again and began heating the water ready for that evening.
