Jim’s Plumbing attended a job where the customer was unable to use their toilet or kitchen sink due to a severe blockage. We first attempted to use the drain cleaning machine and were unable to clear the pipes. Our next course of action was to put a drain camera down the drain. It quickly became evident that there was a breakage or obstruction that was not allowing the water to pass through.
What we discovered is that one of the bends in the plastic pipe was broken, as shown in the photo. This, in turn, had allowed tree roots to enter the drain and cause the blockage. Clearing this was going to be a lengthy task. Once pipes are damaged this badly, blockages will only become more frequent. The customer was given a fixed price to dig down to the drain and replace the damaged pipe.
Within 2 hours, the plumber had an excavator arrive to commence digging down to the drain. With the use of the plumbers pipe locator, we could accurately locate the broken pipe and dig directly to the source.
An inspection point was also installed into the drain and bought this pipe up to ground level. This access point will allow a plumber to inspect the drain much easier and identify any future blockages. Once the pipework was replaced, we contacted a local plumbing inspector who came and inspected the drain to make sure it was all to regulation.
Once this was passed, we commenced the back filling of the hole. Later that afternoon, the job was completed and our customer was once again able to use their drains.
