Are Bidets an alternative to toilet paper?

Are Bidets an alternative to toilet paper?

What is a bidet and how do they work?

The recent coronavirus pandemic has caused a shortage of essential items, with the main one being toilet paper. Bidets provide an environmentally friendly alternative and eliminate the need to unnecessarily leave the house for toilet paper. But what is a bidet toilet and how do they work? A bidet is a low oval basin used for washing oneself after using the toilet. They work by spraying water and promote increased personal hygiene after you have used the loo.

The modern variety includes a plumbed-in water supply and a drainage opening. There is also a range of electronic toilet seats which include a washing facility. In several European countries, a bidet is today required by law to be present in every bathroom containing a toilet. Whilst not compulsory in Australia, their usage has increased. “Bidet” is a French word that means “little horse” due to the straddling position adopted when using it. It is most commonly used in cultures where maintaining good personal hygiene is paramount, such as the Islamic world, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Europe and of course, France.

What benefits do bidets have?

Bidets are a really good solution for toilet paper because when you’re washing instead of constantly wiping, there is no risk of discomfort. Likewise, older customers who are less mobile appreciate the ease of a bidet. Some of the other bidet advantages include:

  • Health benefits
  • Hygiene benefits
  • Increased privacy
  • Eco-friendliness

Can I install a bidet?

Consumers are being warned not to install DIY hoses and bidets during the global COVID-19 crisis. The Master Plumbers’ Association has warned against the DIY installation of bidets. This type of installation is illegal and could put the health and safety of your family at risk. Plumbing, drainage and gas work is not DIY and a licensed plumber should be contacted immediately.

What are electric bidets?

An electric bidet is a toilet seat that fits over your existing toilet. At Jim’s Plumbing, we supply, service, repair and install all bidets. We recommend contacting us when installing an electric bidet. This ensures that the bidet will be set up correctly. We will first remove your existing seat and mount the electric bidet to your toilet bowl.

As for plumbing, the electric bidet taps into the existing water supply. Our plumbers are fully licensed and specialise in the installation of bidet toilet seats. The only thing you need to consider is to make sure you have a power outlet near your toilet, as the bidet will need to be plugged in. If you don’t, you can use an extension cord or we can organise an electrician to install one.

More Popular Than Ever Before

The interest and demand for bidets has certainly increased in recent times due to COVID-19 and the toilet paper shortage. The general stigma against bathroom culture has been removed and people are embracing new alternatives more than ever before. At Jim’s Plumbing, we have seen a rise in our bidet services.
