An Aquamax 155 Litre stainless steel gas hot water service was installed approximately 8 years ago, and to the surprise of the customer, had been an amazingly strong and dependable system until recently. The customer was experiencing water temperatures not as hot as usual and immediately feared the worst, an entire hot water service replacement.
Fearing that the entire system may need replacing, a call was placed to the Jim’s Plumbing national call centre to see if something can be done to restore the temperature to its original state. The customer was given a one hour time frame thanks to the state of the art dispatching system employed by Jim’s. All of the mobile plumbing vans are GPS tracked, to ensure that all customers are given the absolute closest time available. Happy with the time frame, the fully qualified Jim’s plumber was dispatched to the customer and arrived on time ready for work.
The plumber quickly set about the fault finding process on the Aquamax system, beginning with a gas test of supply to the unit, using a manometer to measure gas flow. There was no fault with gas flow, so the next step – checking the integrity and temperature setting of the thermostat, again no faults were found here.
The plumber then noticed the unit had been fitted with a tempering valve on the outgoing hot water line. This device controls the temperature of the water going into the house and maintains a steady pre-set temperature by mixing cold water in a junction valve.
Upon a visual inspection, all appeared to be fine with this device, until the temperature of the water was tested before the valve and after. Low and behold the temp on the house side of the valve was significantly lower than that before the valve. The plumber informed the customer that there was not a major problem with the hot water system, and did not require replacing. The plumber was able to quickly and simply replace this very common part that had failed, thanks to the fully stocked van that all of our plumbers use. Within an hour the customer had the regular hot water temperature restored to the home and as an added bonus, the plumber was able to replace the hot water relief valve also, preventing the risk of cylinder explosion in the event of system malfunction causing overheating.
