Replace Aquamax 155 Litre Gas Hot Water, Heater
Jims Plumbing was called out to a residence this week where the customers were experiencing something novel with their hot water service. While the temperature was fine, the water pressure was dropping and hot water from the taps was discoloured.
We had a plumber close by and were able to get him to the house within an hour of the phone call being made. Once on site, the plumber began to inspect the hot water system. The customer thought that house pipework which was 50 years-old may have been the problem. This was a possibility, but from experience, we know that it pays to check the water from the source before checking the rest of the house.
Luckily, the plumber did so because the cause of the discoloured water was actually a result of a dissolved anode. The anode rod has metal in it that is supposed to oxidize in place of the steel in a hot water tank. This prevents the tank from leaking. When the anode metal is gone, the steel core of the tank starts to rust discolouring the water. In this particular instance, the anode rod had dissolved a while ago leaving the interior of the tank in quite a bad shape. The plumber recommended a full replacement as the best solution.
Attempting to repair the current unit may have been in vain as cleaning it up and replacing the parts would be a costly risk with the damage to the tank greatly reducing the lifespan of the unit. Once the customer saw the inside of the tank for himself he agreed with the plumber’s first option – to replace the unit. The size was suitable for them at this time but they were worried it would not accommodate them in the future. The plumber recommended replacing the old unit with a new 155 litre gas storage unit. It was almost identical in size but due to newer technology and a 5 star energy rating system, it could deliver up to 390 litres in the first hour; much better than their current unit.
The customers agreed to the decision and several hours later the new tank was heating up and ready for the evening. The customers even called back to pass on their appreciation for the plumber’s help and to say that everything was running perfectly. This case was not an issue with proper maintenance, but just one of the problems any hot water unit can face.
